DETACHMENT INFORMATION
Welcome to the Underworld Detachment, the home to the criminal element of the Star Wars Universe. Here you will find pirates, gangsters, henchmen, thieves, smugglers, thugs, and… of course… scum and villainy!
We strive to create accurate and quality costumes based on characters from Star Wars stories, including movies, animated and live action shows, etc. The references are as vast as the character possibilities. The majority of characters within our ranks fall under the ‘denizen’ category and were featured on the big screen, but we look forward to the expansion of our known narrative with recent and upcoming television series. Our goal is to serve as a center of knowledge and experience in these and future costumes.
Underworld was formed in 2018, and it was the first new Detachment of the 501st Legion in 11 years: the creation of this new Detachment was over two years in the making.
Characters were moved from the “Unaffiliated Detachment”, and some were transferred from the Krayt Clan Detachment. Out of the 12,000+ active members of the 501st Legion – there were under 40 members for this Detachment when it was founded, and a total of 19 costumes. We now celebrate a roster of over 40 unique characters with over 450 members in the Detachment globally.
Our community is filled with passionate and skilled members, as well as some of the most unique costumes found within the Legion. As we continue to consolidate past research and experiences in our forums, we look forward to assisting you with your 501st Legion and costume journey.
May the Force be with You,
Deborah Chick

Meet Our Members
THE 501ST LEGION
The 501st Legion is a Star Wars fan club dedicated to celebrating the Star Wars universe through costuming; specifically the costumes and characters of the stormtrooper and other Imperial forces, as well as non-affiliated villains and denizens.
The Legion is an all-volunteer organization formed for the express purpose of bringing together costume enthusiasts under a collective identity within which to operate. The Legion seeks to promote interest in Star Wars through the building and wearing of quality costumes, and to facilitate the use of these costumes for Star Wars-related events as well as contributions to the local community through costumed charity and volunteer work.
The Legion recognizes it holds no claim over the costumes and characters it portrays, and that their use is a privilege extended by Lucasfilm Ltd. (LFL). The members of the Legion acknowledge and accept that while in costume, we represent the Star Wars brand and will do so professionally and responsibly at all times. The text shown above is an excerpt from Article 1 of the 501st Legion Charter.
The complete Legion Charter is located here.
501st Legion Detachments
If you are considering building your own Star Wars villain costume in any of the accepted categories of the 501st Legion, we recommend that you visit a 501st Legion Detachment. Detachments are online Legion communities that are helpful for members who wish to create a costume. CRLs do not offer advice or give specifics on on how to construct a costume. Detachments do offer guidance and support for costumers in that area. They also offer a place for like costumes to post tips and tricks or tutorials, host “Work in Progress” of other members’ costumes and ongoing information on current CRL development. While our Legion forums are restricted to Active members, participation on our Detachment forums is open to the public. A listing of Detachments, their costumes, mission statements, and their contact information can be found below. Click on each for more information.
If you are considering a Star Wars hero, Jedi, or Rebel costume, we recommend you visit our sister organization, the Rebel Legion.
